A rare photograph of the inside of one of Dunfermline’s best known shops, Woolworths in the High Street. The company were reluctant to allow photos to be taken to prevent the imitation and copying of their very successful sales methods, although there are many of the outside of the building. This one taken in 1954 shows its long counters and wooden floors before the shop was modernised in the 1960’s and escalators installed. After it was closed it was occupied by Goldberg’s and subsequently Poundstretcher

I loved Woolies. I don’t think Goldbergs had their shop there though, I remember it being down near St Margaret’s St.

I remember the wooden floor and the boxes with the loose biscuits for sale….memoriesx
Loved Woolies worked there fir a while on sweets and also fruit and veg great days
The first escalator I was on was in Woolworths. My Mother said when it first opened it was the tanner store nothing was over sixpence. 2 1/2 pence for young folk.
That was in the days when the high street was full of shoe shops! Remember Saxone, Truform, Timpsons, D.E. , Buchanans,?? Now it’s coffee shops popping up everywhere!!
When the coop and woollies went ….the high street lost its soul xx
The loose vanilla fudge was to die for, I also remember Bruce & glen the grocers at the glen gates, you left a list and they picked it for you, a proper shop
I can remember getting dragged around as a kid and goldbergs too.
Used to take my wee sister to woolies with my paper round earnings on a Saturday morning lol
I loved it as a child every Saturday roasted peanuts and a tour round all the stall areas I lovex Xmas too
a magic place to work. Was a Saturday girl, salesfloor,stockroom then into the office.They were good to their staff
I was a Saturday girl and worked on the soap counter. Soap was sold loose then. Eventually worked on the tills.
I worked there as a window dresser in 1960 I think it was.
