Pilmuir Hall was Dunfermline’s first swimming baths gifted by Andrew Carnegie, and later became a public hall when the new Carnegie Baths were built further up Pilmuir Street. The building was later used by the DHSS before being demolished in 1963. Situated on the corner close to the Kinema Ballroom it was later the site of the Castleton pub, and later again, Sinky’s. At the top of the photograph is the Kinema picture house and the Post Office.

A travesty a piece of heritage like this was destroyed. Great pic btw.
So sad they thought it was ok to demolish that and replace it with a concrete bunker-fools!
How right you are Ian, we had some beautiful buildings.
Legalised vandalism comes to mind !!

Sad this was demolished typical of Dunf council, the town is a mess.
This was a beautiful building again destroyed by council great photo
They are vandalising Carnegie Library as we speak-eejits!
Used to be in the swimming club
What is happening with the library?does anyone know!!!!
I worked in this building (DHSS) up until 1967 when I transferred to the Falkirk office, so I think that the demolition date of 1963 is incorrect.
omg castleton and ballroom those were the days my friends xxx
Didn’t even know this building had existed – so sad. Really wish there was some kind of protest group to stop the local authority continuing to destroy what little heritage is left. Cllrs over the years have a lot to answer for!
Opened July 1877 … Demolished July 1971.
The site had previously been a Slaughterhouse!
It was latterly the National Insurance Office then Social Security.
Unsure why it was taken down, no notion of fire etc. to my knowledge. Perhaps just redundant &/or beyond economic repair? Structure looks quite sound. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152610955903314&set=a.10150905921208314.406737.585833313&type=3&src=https%3A%2F%2Fscontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-xpa1%2Ft31.0-8%2F10557504_10152610955903314_5015588132153146236_o.jpg&smallsrc=https%3A%2F%2Fscontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-xpf1%2Fv%2Ft1.0-9%2F10953958_10152610955903314_5015588132153146236_n.jpg%3Foh%3D20169286d4978f289ebf51c47ea5d2f6%26oe%3D555DF6B3&size=2002%2C1074
I remember the swimming baths and Scottish country dancing lessons being held there.
Aye-councillors-I remember they didn’t much like paying library fines way back when……….
Don’t know why they distroyed the old Turkish baths the whole building could have been kept and run as an private health club with Victorian pool and the gyms they still have one in Glasgow and there is a 5year waiting list to get in must be popular a nea swimming pool could have been built outside town at the Motorola plant with all schools using why spend money on a site you don’t own Carnegie trust own it
