This photograph shows some of the shops in what was Queen Anne Street being demolished in 1983 to make way for the Kingsgate Centre. The Union Inn which had stood on the corner has already gone and a start is being made to the florists R C Ferguson, before going on to the vast premises of Goodall’s garage which had previously been stables. The Erskine Church building which still stands today can be seen on the right of the photograph and the Post Office is in the distance on the left.

All this destruction of our lovely town to gain a shopping mall!
There was also Coopers store just before Goodall’s garage complex. Our town centre is no different from any other, empty shops, charity shops, same old multiples and virtually no privately owned outlets coupled with poor parking facilities, those there are expensive, and a quite complicated road system which seems to have been designed to avoid our High Street.

Loved the Union our bus stopped just outside then up the stairs for a pint of heavy, then a black in’ tan followed by a black velvet then off to then off to the Ballroom 1963/4/5/6/7 happy days Dunfermline now a disaster thanks to rubbish planning.

I was working abroad, and couldn’t recognise all this when I came home, but we did still have the high street and co-op.
