When Pittencrieff Park had a wide range of animals for visitors to see including monkeys, fish, rabbits and reptiles, one of the the favourite residents in the Aviary was Billy the white cockatoo. Seen here photographed in 1964, children particularly liked him because he accepted pennies from them and hid them in gaps in bricks around his cage. This money added up to a substantial sum each year which was donated to local charities.

Best place on the planet growing up. Billy for sure. Open spaces. Peacocks, paddling pools. Swings. Driving roads for kids, brilliant. They say times have moved on, sometimes they don’t.

Am too young to remember billy or the monkeys. I do remember the rabbits the donkey chickens. I loved splashing in the pool with my mum or grandparents. Many happy memories in the glen it’s just not the same now xx

I remember billy. I loved the tropical fish, monkeys, and the reptiles. I was in the maze at scone palace the other day and realised the last one had been the one in the glen! Miss the paddling pools too.

I remember Billy. Shame it’s all away now, never survived after the foot and mouth clamp down but I think it was just the excuse Fide council was looking for!
