Photograph of the squirrel cage that used to be in the Glen. At that time males and females weren’t permitted to use the same swings, and the sign in the photograph states ‘Reserved for girls under fourteen years of age’.

The other swings are out of shot. I wonder if they were the boys swings. I wold also be interested to know if they are where the present day swings are, or are they closer to the louise Carnegie Gates?

I stayed in Priory Lane in the 1950’s. These are what we called the ‘bottom swings’ as they were down by the West Nethertown Broad Street entrance. There was the girls swings on one side and the boys swings on the other. There is still a playpark there now of course – but no separate area for boys and girls.
