This photograph taken in the 1970’s show the area at the bottom of the New Row before the construction of the dual carriageway through the Public Park. This was a busy and dangerous junction at Bothwell Street, New Row and East Nethertown, though that didn’t stop people hanging out their washing on the drying green as can be seen under the viaduct on the far left in the first photograph taken in the 1970’s. The hooks are still fastened on to the stonework today, though the tenants have long moved away.

Remember it well. Nightmare using the junction from Netherton Broad Street into Bothwell Street as I remember.

He’s going the wrong way
I remember this junction, but can’t recall the washing! Brig Cafe was a great place back in the day x
I lived in Whirlbut street and few people had cars. No problem. Walk up the NewRow and you were in the high street. Or you could use the scenic route through the Glen and you were at the bottom of the High Street.
I remember it looked that when I were a nipper, except in colour! Lol
Got a Sunday shift helping demolish the Brig Tavern 🙁
Are there any pics with the Brig Tavern in it?
Was the good old days, walked to Queen anne school ,half way up every day .
Old Dunfermline was a great place to live. All the best bits have gone…I don’t like the progress.
Is that you at the bottom legs
Yep remember that
Is the Lorry on the wrong side of the road?
Was called The Gusset because of the shape if you looked from Bothwell Street
I agree Margaret Maxwell. Can’t remember the buildings there in the 70s 80s.
Had to share this it brings back so many memories!
Where’s the pub? The brig?
I was born in Dunfermline in 1969, i remember the pub that was at the bottom of the new row “the brig tavern” i think.?
I used to stay in the top left flat when I was just born in 1970.
The Brig Tavern closed 30 years ago today great pub sadly missed.
