Remember the days when the monkeys, snakes, fish, parrots and birds were in the Glen (Dunfermline)
Aye its a pity its not there today, its amazing the amount of people that ask about it and also the pets corner they used to have with rabbits and guinea pigs etc they just seemed to be obsessed to just having peacocks now.
loved going to the glen. Its not the same nowadays mind you do not think the birds would be safe these days the way some the young ones act shame
Remember Billy used to be given pennies which went to upkeep of aviary many moons ago
I was an electrician with James Scott in Campbell St. and was lucky enough to repair a fault there so saw the fish, snakes etc from behind the scenes.
They had zoo status for a while. Marmosets and their babies were let loose and they ate all the many cockroaches and any spiders/insects in the building, the roof ,the trees round about had no birds left. The keeper was very informative . Such a shame the “foot and mouth” happened and SUDDENLY all the animals across Fife were got rid of. Cost-cutting exercise I think!
My dad Jim Kay used to look after the aviaries in the late 60s and early 70s, used to help him in the school holidays great memories
There used to be a talking parrot in the Aviary and it went missing one day. Two men stole it and sold it to a Chinese in town. FACT FACT FACT
Used to love the glen, would get the bus in to Dunfermline, buy some peanuts from the pet shop and feed the birds, if you stood long enough with your hand out, blue tits, sparrows and robins would take them out of your hand. Would visit the hothouse, aviary and rabbits. Wonderful memories. Moved away in 1985, was gutted when a few years back went to visit and there was nothing there. Bet you’re right about vandals though.
I liked to go and see the animal house and the rabbits house a little bit further down and on the way home a shot of the bikes at the pittencreiff street end
I used to love visiting this and the little rabbit house near it. I didn’t realise it was all gone its been so long since I’ve been to the glen.
These were the days we didn’t go around vandalising places we respected our surroundings, we were safe to walk the streets and whats the difference from today we were disaplined far far to soft now . Bring back the good old days.
I remember Billy – he was an amazing bird and he collected pennies from you
This was a great day out. Visit the animals then have a real treat afternoon tea in the Restaurant. My Gran brought me so loved her tea treat. That was at least 60 yes. Ago.
Loved this when I was a kid although my dad did have the parrots swearing a few times lol. lots of good childhood memories there xx
After my husband Jim Green died in 1995 I gifted his cockateils and canaries to the aviary WAs so sorry when it closed down.
We were all Oakley wid tinks went to the baths , then woolies for Brocken biscuits then doon the glen , then walk back home to Oakley! Oh the 70s
Saw a baby rabbit and its mother other morning down at the bandstand, there used to be a lot in the park, have they been moved? Maybe cause of dogs
We used to visit it every day when we lived in Pittencrief St.
Billy the cockatoo saved pennies in a slot in his cage and they were given to charity.
I remember there was a white cockatoo used to put pennies in his cage and he used to pick them up and take them up to his nest. Loved going there and seeing all the animals.
I can remember wandering round with my new girlfriend when this monkey started knocking one out… I was mortified then started laughing like whatever.. she became my wife so it must have been acceptable in those days ..
